Carl Henson, WB4ZNH and XYL Martha, WN4FVU operated from Asmara, Eritrea in October, 1992.
ASMARA, ERITREA -- A former Italian Colony on the Red Sea, Eritrea was an early victim of the Cold War. Caught between Western and Ethiopian interests, it took 30 years of armed struggle for Eritrea to win the right to self-determination and become independent in June of 1991. For further information, read National Geographic, September, 1985.
Asmara is a lovely clean and modern city belying the fact that Eritrea is largely a country of subsistence farmers. The elevation of more than 7,000 feet combined with the southern latitude means pleasant weather with warm days and cool nights. Wide, tree-lined streets and a friendly and trusting population make Asmara truly a gem on the horn of Africa. Eritrea's determined and capable leadership is making it a model of good government.
Martha and I wish to thank the Provisional Government of Eritrea and the Telecommunications Authority of Eritrea for allowing us to be the first amateur radio operation from their country in over 30 years. Thanks to Delta Airlines, who makes these DXpeditions possible.
Very 73 and Good DX! Carl and Martha
