Ken Byers, K4TEA and his brother Brook, K4TKM were granted special permission to operate the 1988 CQ WPX CW Contest from the Vatican. The Multi-operator, single-transmitter category claimed a score of 4,534,933 points with 3,223 QSOs and 667 prefixes.

The Vatican is the world's smallest independent sovereign country and is located in the heart of Rome. This religious and political center is the headquarters for the Catholic church and its Society of Jesus ("Jesuits") where the HV3SJ station is located. The Jesuit order of 36,000 members is engaged primarily in educational, literary and mission work throughout the world.
