Andy was first licensed in 1987, and
with access to 10M
SSB as a novice, immediately began chasing DX from his parents'
house in New Mexico, enjoying the excellent
conditions of Solar Cycle 22. By late 1988 he
had upgraded to Extra and was assigned
AA5JF shortly thereafter. Although he got
some rare ones in the log, he sadly missed out
on 3Y5X. His last operation before the long
QRT was the 1990 California QSO Party, when
he used the Cornell University club station
W2CXM to win, as an 18-year-old, one of the bottles of wine provided by the NCCC. He was
fortunate that his mom saved all his QSL
cards, including buro cards received long after
he had left for college.
He remembered to renew his license in 1998 and 2008, and again in
2018, which was the impetus for returning to
the air from his QTH in Augusta. During
COVID, he discovered the DX Marathon,
which seemed the ideal combination of contesting and DXing. Starting in 2022 he helped organize the SEDXC effort in the DX Marathon, which in 2023 led to the club placing
first amongst US clubs. He looks forward to
giving a short presentation about what is new
and changing in the DX Marathon on February
20th and then will lead a club discussion
about tips and tricks for doing well.
